SUMMARY:On the Brink of Pink: Brain Health\, Burnout\, and Cognitive Resilience
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBurnout is no longer just a buzzword — it is a measurable threat to cognitive performance\, clinical judgment\, and long-term brain health. The annual “On the Brink of Pink” Symposium gathers physicians\, researchers\, medical students\, healthcare providers\, and workplace leaders for an interactive session on wellness in the workplace. This year’s theme is Brain Health\, Burnout\, and Cognitive Resilience\, where we explore the science of resilience and the systems that protect it. \nJoin us for this free half-day symposium featuring experts from Rutgers and RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group\, where you will learn practical strategies for protecting cognitive longevity — for yourselves\, your patients\, and the teams you lead.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, Sept. 15 \n8:30 a.m.* – 12:30 p.m. \nClinical Academic Building\, Room 1302 \n125 Paterson Street \nNew Brunswick \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLight refreshments will be served. \nAll recipients will receive a “swag bag.”

SUMMARY:Socratic Scrub Grand Rounds: Dr. Julian Varas Cohen
DESCRIPTION:The Rutgers Acute Care Surgery Research (RASR) Lab at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School\, in collaboration with the Rutgers School of Graduate Studies Biomedical and Health Sciences and the Rutgers Health Office of Postdoctoral Affairs\, is pleased to introduce the Socratic Scrub Grand Rounds series. \nMost academic presentations showcase the polished final product. This series focuses on the Night Science behind discovery—the often messy\, nonlinear\, and deeply human process that drives impactful research. \nIn each session\, a distinguished investigator will take us behind one of their published studies and discuss the story that never appears in the manuscript: the unexpected pivots\, failed experiments\, unpublished findings\, critical decisions\, and moments of uncertainty that ultimately shaped the work. \nThe Socratic Scrub Grand Rounds offers a rare opportunity to learn not only what researchers discovered\, but how they thought\, adapted\, and persevered along the way. \nOur inaugural session will feature Dr. Julian Varas Cohen on Friday June 5 from 10:30-11:30 by Zoom\, who will discuss the development of artificial intelligence models designed to assess the quality of feedback in medical education. Through the lens of one of his published studies\, Dr. Varas will share the challenges\, decisions\, setbacks\, and lessons learned while translating an educational problem into an AI-driven solution. \nRegister here to receive the Zoom session link: https://go.rutgers.edu/tt80zizb \nWe welcome students\, trainees\, faculty\, postdoctoral scholars\, and anyone interested in the process of scientific discovery.

SUMMARY:The ABT (And\, But\, Therefore) Framework for Science Communication
DESCRIPTION:The ABT (And\, But\, Therefore) Framework \nSpeaker:   \n \n  \nRandy Olson\, PhD \nScientist\, Filmmaker\, and Science Communication Strategist \n  \n  \n  \nDo you struggle to clearly communicate your research to broader audiences\, reviewers\, or collaborators? Join us for a university-wide training session with Randy Olson\, PhD as he guides us through the ABT (And\, But\, Therefore) Framework\, a simple\, powerful tool used by scientists\, communicators\, and policymakers worldwide to make complex ideas clear and compelling. \nIn this interactive communications seminar\, you will learn how to apply the ABT Framework to strengthen your grant proposals\, manuscript abstracts\, presentations\, and everyday scientific communication. Whether you are a graduate student\, postdoctoral fellow\, faculty member\, or staff researcher\, this session will give you a practical\, immediately applicable tool to sharpen how you tell the story of your science. \n\nAbout Randy Olson \nRandy Olson trained as a marine biologist\, earning his Ph.D. from Harvard University and serving on the faculty at the University of New Hampshire before leaving academia to pursue filmmaking at the University of Southern California. He is the creator of the ABT Framework\, a narrative structure derived from storytelling principles used in Hollywood that has become a widely adopted tool in the scientific community for clear\, audience-centered communication. \nOlson is the author of several acclaimed books on science communication\, including Houston\, We Have a Narrative\, and The Narrative Gym\, and has worked with NASA\, the National Academies of Sciences\, and research institutions worldwide to help scientists communicate with greater clarity\, impact\, and confidence. \n\nEvent details \nHosted by Jay Piccirillo\, MD\, FACS\, The TL1 Program & The R25 Program in partnership with the Center for Health & Science Communication at Becker Library\, this lecture is open to all. \n\nOnline via Zoom; Registration required\nFor questions\, contact Adisa Kalkan at adisakalkan@wustl.edu
